One Room Challenge Week 3 – The Seating

ORC WEEKLY UPDATES

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5 | Week 6

Happy Friday! Welcome to Week 3 of my dining room makeover for the One Room Challenge. I’ve made quite a bit of progress since my last post that I am excited to share. Before I jump into the updates, check out my Before photos and the plan for my dining room in my Week 1 and Week 2 posts.

Last week I shared my in-progress shot of the window bench. This week I am happy to share my completed bench! I am very, VERY happy with the results.

A few updates from last week though. The bench I initially built was a little too narrow. My original plan was to have my bench 15-inch in depth, but surprise, surprise in my excitement I cut the boards 1inch too short. My bench turned out to be 14-in in depth, which wasn’t very cozy with the window molding above it. I didn’t want to disassemble the entire thing to start from scratch, so I simply added 2x4s adjacent to the front frame of the bench to add more depth (always a good idea to buy more lumber than you need, it might just come in handy!). Then I replaced the 15-inch plywood seat with 17-inch plywood, which left about an inch of overhang. Check out the details about the bench in my DIY window bench post.

Honestly, I’m not mad at my mistake because the 17-inch depth bench is much more comfortable size wise than I assume the 15-inch would have been. I originally decided on the 15-inch depth because I thought anything bigger would look too bulky in the small space. Boy was I wrong! The bench right now works perfectly.

Next Steps

This week I will be focusing on the walls. Initially, I planned to create a shiplap panel accent wall but then I came across a beautiful slat accent wall on neatly.living Instagram and I was instantly inspired. Here is the pictured of her accent wall and other slat walls for inspiration. I love that it is a unique way to add some interest to the room. It is definitely more original than the very popular shiplap walls.

Here is the area I will be adding the accent wall. Because I want the room to feel light and airy, I decided to stick with a natural wood on mustard color scheme. I plan to either paint the wall a deep mustard color and use a natural stain on the slat wood or use a natural stain on slats and paint the door mustard.

I also need to decide on how I want to design the slat wall. Here are the top 3 arrangements I’ve come up with so far. I plan to use this week to try a couple different arrangements before I move forward.

Come back next week to check out what I decided to do and the accent wall big reveal. I will also share my plans for the rest of the room next week which includes floor and window treatments. In the meantime, check out what the featured designers and other guest participants are working on over at the ORC.
