FALL 2021 ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: WEEK 2 – The Plan

FALL 2021 ONE ROOM CHALLENGE: WEEK 2 – The Plan

ORC WEEKLY UPDATES

Week 1 | Week 2 | Week 3 | Week 4 | Week 5 | Week 6

It is officially week two of the One Room Challenge and I must admit that I’m already starting to sweat. If you missed last week’s post, I went through some ideas I had for my bedroom and shared my inspiration for the room. Be sure to check out the before pictures here of my bedroom. This week I am happy share that I have finally decided on my design plans for the bedroom. As I mentioned in my previous post, all my designs will be renter friendly, meaning I can easily undo the design or remove the décor when I’m ready to leave. Also, all my designs will be cost effective, my budget is a little tight as this is a temporary home for me.

Okay, so let’s talk design plans. As I mentioned, the room is a little on the smaller size, roughly 12’ x 12’, with two windows on one wall and two doors on the opposing wall (see floor plan above). There are a couple goals I am hoping to achieve in this redesign of the room:

  1. Add texture and color to the room to create a warm and inviting atmosphere
  2. Add some architectural interest to the room that is renter friendly
  3. Create a reading nook that doesn’t feel too crowded
  4. Add some additional lighting

Firstly, to create a cozy and inviting space I am planning to use neutral earth tone colors. To create texture in the room I am planning to use a Roman clay plaint on the walls and a light, natural wood finish for the wall slats, dresser, and other furniture. I also plan to add linen sheets and curtains and a soft rug to add some contrast to the rougher textures in the room.

To add some architectural interest, I plan to create a pseudo slat wall by creating an oversize wall hanging of slats that can then be hung on the wall. I have never done this before so I anticipate this will take some trial and error. This will be a good renter friendly way to add some creativity to the walls without actually damaging the walls. I am hoping this wall hanging will also create the illusion of higher ceilings therefore making the room look larger. The 3D renderings below give an idea of the colors, textures and slat wall I am hoping to create in the room.

I also plan to add a cozy chair in the corner beside the dresser to create a reading nook. I will add a mini gallery wall, cozy blanket, and some lighting (haven’t decided if I will use a table lamp of floor lamp yet). There is an electrical panel on the wall beside the space I plan to put the chair, I thought it might be cool to create more vertical slats to hide the electrical panel and tie in the slats from the bed head.

This Week’s Goal

This week I will work on the walls, that includes painting and creating the vertical slats for the reading nook and wall behind the bed. I also plan to decide on and order the textiles I plan to use, i.e., linen sheets, curtains, throw pillows and a rug. Fingers crossed that I will get this done in a week. Check back next week for more updates and also check out what the featured designers and other guest participants are working on over at the ORC.
